Programmable thermostats help take the burden away from turning your thermostat up and down based upon temperature and time of day. They allow seem-less comfort for you while your building is occupied and energy efficiency when it’s not.
For example, during cooling season, a programmable thermostat used in your building may be set to lower the temperature during the workday when your building may be occupied. It may then be set to turn on the air conditioning shortly before people start arriving to work, allowing the building to cool down while still having saved air conditioning energy during non-work time hours.
Conversely, during the heating season, the programmable thermostat may be set to allow the temperature in your building to drop when the building is unoccupied during the night, re-heating the building prior to occupants arriving that morning. The difference between the interior and exterior of your building will be greatest on a cold winter night, which reduces energy loss and saves money on heating costs.
Energy Economizers (Intellidyne)
Our exclusive line of Intellidyne heating and central air conditioning controls called “energy economizers” are proven to reduce your building’s energy consumption between 10 percent – we guarantee that, every time – and 30 percent. Not only do these type of controls reduce energy consumption, they lower heating and cooling costs and help reduce pollution. By monitoring your building’s system, the controls can shut the system off and cycle the compressors so that the building is not using more energy than needed. Through better energy management, Intellidyne’s patented economizers also extend the lives of heating and cooling systems and reduce regular maintenance – all while providing optimal environmental comfort.

Like a hybrid car, a hybrid HVAC system can “choose” between two different energy sources to attain the highest efficiency. Depending on the demand for power, a hybrid vehicle (like the Toyota Prius or the Chevy Volt) “chooses” to run on battery power or power from a gasoline engine. With hybrid HVAC, the system’s computer selects either an electrically-powered heat pump or a furnace that burns natural gas, propane or fuel oil. Hybrid HVAC systems are sometimes referred to as “hybrid heating systems” because they provide the greatest energy savings during the heating season.
Here’s how the energy-saving technology works: When it’s chilly outside, heating is provided by an air-source heat pump that consumes electricity. The heat pump uses a refrigerant compound to “pump” heat from outside to inside. But when it gets really cold outside (below freezing), an air-source heat pump can no longer work efficiently. That’s when the fossil fuel furnace takes over. Circuitry in the HVAC control module tells the system when to switch from heat pump to furnace heating. During the summer, the heat pump’s cycle is reversed so that the heat pump can provide air conditioning.
Solar Water Heating
Solar water heaters — also called solar domestic hot water systems — can be a cost-effective way to generate hot water for your building. They can be used in any climate, and the fuel they use — sunshine — is free. They work by using solar collectors and storage tanks. Different types are used for different climates. We have the right ones for your building in this freezing to hot and humid Pennsylvania climate!
Variable Frequency Drive
One of the most successful energy management tools ever applied to HVAC building systems is the variable frequency drive (VFD). For more than 20 years, VFDs have successfully been installed on fan and pump motors in a range of variable load applications. Energy savings vary from 35 to 50 percent over conventional constant speed applications, resulting in a return on investment of six months to two years.
While the number of applications suitable for early generation drives was limited based on the horsepower of the motor, today’s drives can be installed in practically any HVAC application found in commercial and institutional buildings. Systems can be operated at higher voltages than those used by earlier generations, resulting in off the shelf systems for motors up to 500 horsepower.
